How Does Adaptive Testing Actually Work?
A traditional test gives every test-taker the same fixed questions in the same order. An adaptive test instead changes the difficulty of the next question based on how you answered the last one: get it right and the next gets harder, get it wrong and it gets easier. The idea sounds simple, but the statistics behind it explain why a thirty-question adaptive test can be more accurate than a hundred-question fixed one.
Why aim for roughly 50% correct? Because a question you are certain to answer correctly tells us nothing new, and neither does one that is impossible for you. The information sits where your chances are close to even. So the engine moves quickly towards the difficulty level where you get about half right — statistically the richest zone for estimating ability. This is also why adaptive tests feel hard: if it feels hard, it is working.
What do accredited exams use? They rely on Item Response Theory, a family of mathematical models describing each question by at least two parameters: its difficulty, and how sharply it separates stronger candidates from weaker ones. These parameters are calibrated on thousands of test-takers before a question enters service — and that calibration, not the algorithm, is the expensive part of a certified exam.
What does Nest English use? A six-level promote/demote ladder, a Maximum Likelihood estimate over question difficulties, and a correction for guessing on multiple-choice items. It is inspired by the same idea and accurate enough for a quick self-check, but it is not a substitute for a calibrated psychometric engine. We say so plainly because claiming otherwise would be misleading.
Why is an adaptive test shorter? Because it wastes nothing. A fixed test must cover the whole range from A1 to C2, so it hands beginners C2 items they will never answer and advanced learners A1 items they will never miss. An adaptive test abandons the unhelpful zones within a few questions and spends the rest of its budget where the information is.
When does it stop? When the estimate settles — when new questions stop moving the result meaningfully. This is called convergence, and it explains why the number of questions can differ between candidates on some exams. Answer in a consistent pattern and you converge fast; answer erratically, getting hard items right and easy ones wrong, and the engine needs more evidence before it can settle.
